50 Things You Should Know About me... or Not

Posted on Feb 1, 2007

Ok, well, this being my second entry in this blog ever, I guess 50 things you should know about me would be a great way to let people know who I am and what I am all about. It may clear up any future entries, too.

1. I am pro-gun. Very much so. If you saw my profile, you probably already guessed that. I have a small gun "collection" that includes two semi-auto pistols, a revolver, and an old Swiss rifle. I am a card carrying member of the NRA, Gun Owners of America, and Grass Roots NC. I am also a card carrying CCW permit holder. I am trying to get my Curio and Relic license. And I sell guns in a legal shop for a living. Needless to say, any and all anti-gun garbage is very much unwelcome here. I do not take kindly to it and no one is the exception. If you are anti-gun that is your problem. Keep it out of my journal.

2. I am Pagan. I have been practicing the religion for 14 years.

3. I occasionally make reference to my last job, which was an armored car (money trucks) messenger and supervisor.

4. I have a decent sized knife collection, very small in comparison to most and all of my knives are functional, not collector pieces. Ok, I do have a few collector pieces, but some of those even have razor sharp edges on them. I consider a good blade to be a wonderful accessory and almost always have one on me.

5. While I'm not really the arty type, I do partake in some arts. I write short stories and poetry, and I am currently working - slowly - on my first book. I am also a photographer by hobby.

6. I really, really enjoy archery although I am terrible at it.

7. In reference to the guns thing, also. I am not really a hunter. I plan on trying it some day, but the idea of lugging a 71 year old Swiss K31 through the woods all day isn't too appealing to me. And that's my only rifle. I do target shoot and I do enter the occasional competition. Right now I am prepping my K31 for rifle competitions. He has only been a member of the "family" for a short time, a month tops, so we are still getting to know each other.

8. I name everything. My car is Miss Monster, the Road Warrior. Miss Monster for short. My rifle is Alden (which means "antique, old, wise protector, old friend"). My Sig P226 is named "Secret" (which is a long story for another time). My Smith & Wesson 686 is "Canon," although he is usually just referred to as my little old man. And my Bersa Thunder 380 is "The Noisy Cricket."

9. I like horror movies a lot. But I am also horribly addicted to Lord of the Rings.

10. I read a lot and I tend to skip around with what I read. Pretty much any topic, including horror, fantasy, current events, text books, religion, history, etc. And I have been known to read multiple books at once, up to ten at one time.

11. I am very opinionated and my opinions are strong.

12. I have a short temper, but it seems to be that it only kicks on with certain topics. In many cases I have an bottomless pit of patience. But there is the occasional things that anger me quickly.

13. I own close to 4000 CDs in many, many genres.

14. I have a degree in journalism, but would really like to be a cop.

15. I am horribly afraid of heights and large bodies of water.

16. Speaking of fears, I have a very strange phobia. I am afraid of latex balloons. The big foil like ones are ok, but those little solid colored latex jobs make me very nervous.

17. My left eye is above average and my right eye is below average. Which I always thought was weird since my right side is generally stronger than the left. But I found this out when I took up target shooting. I shoot right handed mostly, but I use my left eye to aim. 23% of the people in this world apparently have this same issue.

18. My favorite alcohol is Black Haus, although I don't drink often.

19. I have a larger collection of candles than most Yankee Candle Company stores stock. :)

20. My favorite animals are wolves, penguins, and owls.

21. I usually only eat chocolate one time a month. ;)

22. I have a collection of gargoyles and I also collect porcelain dolls.

23. I like to build models of military aircraft.

24. At one point I owned and operated 45 web pages. I don't run any of them anymore. I don't have the time for them.

25. I have little patience for sexism. I deal with it a lot since for the past four years I have landed jobs in male dominated fields. But nothing pisses me off more than a stereotype about women, especially if it plays on their intelligence.

26. I am a horrible speller and I am not afraid to admit it.

27. I was born in Staten Island, NY, and spent 17 years living in NJ. I only moved to NC about five years ago.

28. I really enjoy putting scopes on people's rifles, which is probably why I enjoy my job so much. Most of the people bring me their scopes and rifles now, so most of my day is spent doing that, although I am a sales person.

29. I have a thing for cars from the 50s.

30. I make a practice out of keeping dead loved ones in my life. You don't stop loving someone because they died, and that goes for pets, too. I often talk to dead relatives and pets, especially when I have good or bad news.

31. I currently have a dog named Lily who is a beagle mix. We aren't sure what she is mixed with. She was a stray rescued by the SPCA. She has a big beagle head, but she's too big to be just a beagle.

32. My last dog was a mutt, also. Her name was Poochanne and she lived to be 15 years old. She was my first dog, and we grew up together. I was 9 when we adopted her.

33. I also had a little dwarf rabbit named Alice. She was two when she died... we think, anyway. She was also a rescue animal. And she was very ill tempered. But she always sweet talked her way out of things by batting her really long eye lashes.

34. I once had a little stripped fish named Spot who lived for eight years and survived moves to four different tanks. I had him trained to dance for food, and every so often he would do back flips in the water. But not often.

35. Oddie and Garfield were my African Water Frogs. They were estimated to have a life span of one month. They lived almost ten years. They were cool little guys. They just sort of hung there in the water.

36. Miss Piggy was my first pet. She lived to be seven.

37. Tweety was my dad's parakeet. He lived to be 12.

38. My last fish was a goldfish named Phantom the Mystery Goldfish. I went on vacation and left Big Bopper, another goldfish, in the care of friend. When I returned, there was Phantom. And no one could explain where he came from and what happened to Big Bopper. We can guess, of course. However, Phantom lived to be two years old and even survived the 10 hour drive from NJ to NC

39. Doyle was a Beta fish. He wouldn't eat in the morning unless I pet his head first. Hey, I never said I had normal pets.

40. I got interested in shooting guns four years ago when I took the job in armored. My first time shooting a gun was when I went through state qualifying with a Ruger GP100. I scored 86% accuracy on my first try. Not too shabby!

41. My first personally owned gun was my Sig P226 in 40S&W. I bought that to carry in armored when the GP100 gave up the ghost and the company wouldn't give me a gun that worked.

42. I have a thing for pump shotguns and lever action rifles. Although the only long gun I own is actually a straight pull bolt action rifle.

43. I owned my own business when I was 19. It was a metaphysical bookshop in NJ called Mystical Haven.

44. I have four God children.

45. My favorite piece of clothing is a brown leather jacket I inherited from my Uncle Tony when he passed away. I wore it all the time after he passed, even in the summer. The leather is cracked and the coat is unwearable now, but I still have it.

46. I have a cursed coat. It was given to me many years ago by a friend of mine. It had belonged to her father when he was in the Army. He died a month after he gave her the coat, and she died a month after she gave it to me. It doesn't fit anymore, but I still have it in my closet. Sort of afraid to get rid of it.

47. My sense of humor can be very dry sometimes.

48. I like to just drive aimlessly anywhere. And if I get lost while driving, even better.

49. My house in NJ was haunted. I always thought I was nuts until several friends witnessed it, too.

50. I am somewhat "Monk-ish" while at work, but I am really a major slob.
